Getting Started as a Tester

Welcome to OpenScouter. This guide walks you through everything you need to do to create your account, set up your profile, complete the capacity quiz, and connect your payout details so you can start earning.

Take your time with each step. There is no rush, and support is available whenever you need it.

Step 1: Create Your Account

  1. Go to openscouter.com.

You will see a short registration form. Fill in your name, email address, and a password of your choosing.

  2. Check your inbox for a verification email.

Click the link inside to confirm your address. If it does not arrive within a few minutes, check your spam folder. You can also request a new link from the registration page.

  3. Log in to your new account.

Once verified, sign in and you will land on your tester dashboard for the first time.

Step 2: Set Up Your Profile

Your profile helps us match you with studies that are relevant to your experience and setup. You only need to fill it in once, and you can update it any time.

  1. Choose your neurodivergent (ND) categories.

Select all categories that apply to you. There is no limit and no “wrong” answer. Current options include ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, anxiety disorders, Tourette syndrome, and more. Choosing multiple categories is common and encouraged.

  2. List the assistive technology you use.

Add any tools that are part of how you use devices day-to-day. Examples include screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack), magnification software, switch access, AAC devices, keyboard-only navigation, and others. You can also describe custom setups in a free-text field.

  3. Set your device preferences.

Indicate which devices you own and are comfortable testing on. You can select any combination of desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux), mobile (iOS, Android), and tablet. Studies are matched to devices you have actually confirmed.

  4. Write a short bio.

This is visible to clients when they are deciding who to invite to a study. A few sentences about your background, how you use technology, and what you enjoy about accessibility testing is enough. Keep it natural and in your own words.

Step 3: Complete the Capacity Quiz

Before you can accept study invitations, you need to complete the capacity quiz. This step protects you by making sure you have the information you need to participate safely and confidently.

The quiz covers 10 questions across five areas:

AreaWhat it covers
Data collectedWhat information OpenScouter and clients gather during a study
Data usageHow that information is stored, shared, and used
Your rightsHow to access, correct, or delete your data
RisksWhat to expect and how to stop participating at any time
PaymentHow and when you are paid, and what affects your earnings

Taking the quiz

  1. Open the quiz from your dashboard.

Navigate to Profile > Capacity Quiz and select “Start quiz”. You will see one question at a time. Questions are randomised on each attempt, so the order will be different if you take it more than once.

  2. Answer all 10 questions.

Read each question carefully. Most questions are multiple choice. Take your time. There is no time limit.

  3. Submit your answers.

You will see your score immediately. A pass requires 8 out of 10 correct answers.

If you need more than one attempt

You have up to three attempts. If one attempt does not go the way you hoped, that is completely fine. Each new attempt uses a freshly randomised set of questions, which gives you a different angle on the material.

After your second attempt, the dashboard will highlight which topic areas to review before trying again.

Step 4: Connect Your Payout Account

OpenScouter uses Stripe Connect to send your earnings directly to your bank account or debit card. Setting this up takes a few minutes.

  1. Go to Profile > Payouts.

Select “Set up payouts” to begin the Stripe Connect onboarding flow.

  2. Enter your personal details.

Stripe will ask for your legal name, date of birth, and address. This is required by financial regulations and is handled entirely by Stripe. OpenScouter does not store your banking details.

  3. Add your bank account or debit card.

Enter the account number and routing number (or card details) where you want to receive payments. Stripe supports most banks and debit cards in supported countries.

  4. Complete identity verification.

Stripe may ask you to upload a photo ID. This is a standard step for financial services and usually takes under two minutes.

  5. Confirm your setup.

Once approved by Stripe, your dashboard will show a green “Payouts active” badge. You are now ready to receive earnings.

You are ready to go

Once your profile is complete, your capacity quiz is passed, and your payout account is active, you will start receiving study invitations matched to your profile.

You can always update your profile, assistive technology list, or device preferences from the Profile section of your dashboard. If anything feels unclear at any point, the FAQ for Testers is a good next stop, or you can reach the support team directly from the Help menu.
